Kyrgyz Independence Day

Kyrgyzstan on August 31 celebrated the 19th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union. The events in the capital Bishkek were reportedly subdued, and President Roza Otunbaeva appeared tearful as she commemorated the victims of violence in the country's south earlier this summer.
