KHUROSON, Tajikistan -- Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has visited flood-stricken villages of the Khuroson district in southern Khatlon province, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

Meeting with locals, who moved to tent camps after recent floods and mudslides destroyed or damaged their homes, Rahmon promised that all of them would be in newly built or repaired houses by October.

Heavy rains destroyed 148 homes and damaged 127 others in the region in the last month.

The Tajik government plans to build 120 new houses and provide financial aid to about 300 families to help them repair their damaged homes.

Vose district Governor Nurullo Mirzoev said the implementation of such plans could run into problems, since the price of construction materials skyrocketed in the area after the floods.
