Reports from Afghanistan say a NATO airstrike overnight killed eight women and girls in the eastern part of the country.
Afghan officials say the eight, who were out gathering firewood before dawn, were targeted by NATO warplanes in a village in the district of Alingar in Laghman Province.
Provincial health officials say that the wounded, which included girls as young as 10, were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Initially, NATO forces said that about 45 insurgents and no civilians were killed in the attack.
Spokesman Jamie Graybeal said later, however, that NATO is investigating the allegations of civilian deaths.
