Afghan officials say 13 soldiers have been killed by a Taliban attack on an outpost in eastern Afghanistan.
A spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, General Mohammad Zahir Azimi, said the army post was assaulted early on April 12 in Kunar Province’s Nari district, near the Pakistan border.
The French new agency AFP quoted a police officer as saying the outpost was attacked by more than 100 heavily armed militants with rocket-propelled grenades and was “nearly destroyed."
The German dpa news agency quoted Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid as claiming responsibility for the attack.
Mujahid said fighters of the group "captured the outpost" and that at least 15 soldiers were killed in the attack.
Last month, 16 Afghan soldiers were killed by the Taliban in an ambush in the northeastern Badakhshan Province.
