An Iraqi Islamist group linked to Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for attacks earlier this month that killed at least 25 policemen in the western Iraqi city of Haditha.

The Islamic State of Iraq said in a statement posted on a militant website late on March 15 that its fighters easily seized control of Haditha in the early morning raid on March 5.

The statement said two Al-Qaeda fighters were killed, and none were captured during the raid in the Sunni-dominated area.

Iraqi security forces said last week four militants were killed in the raid, and 10 suspects have been arrested in connection with the attacks.
