The Apollo 11 mission blasts off on July 16, 1969.

The founder of Amazon.com says his team has found at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean the F-1 engines that fired Apollo 11 into space on its 1969 mission to the moon.

Billionaire American Jeff Bezos -- who founded Amazon in 1994 -- said he plans to recover one or more of the five engines so they can be put on display in museums.

Bezos said in a blog post that the engines were found nearly 4,300 meters below the surface of the Atlantic using advanced sonar.

The engines, part of the Saturn V rocket that launched the three U.S. astronauts on their moon mission, dropped into the ocean as planned minutes after liftoff.

Days later, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon.
