Latvia: Prime Minister Shkele Resigns

Riga, 28 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Latvian Prime Minister Andris Shkele officially resigned today. The presidential office said President Guntis Ulmanis had accepted the resignation.

Baltic News Service (BNS) says the country's three largest political parties -- Latvia's Way, Democratic Party Saimnieks, and the For Fatherland and Freedom/Latvian National Independence Movement -- agreed today to nominate Economics Minister Guntar Krasts as Shkele's successor.

Our Latvian correspondent says officials from all the seven-party governing coalition are to meet later today to discuss candidates for the vacancy. They are then due to meet Ulmanis to discuss the issue.

Shkele announced last week he was stepping down after a series of ministerial resignations amid corruption scandals. Shkele was also involved in several rows with the parties, comprising his government.
