Ahmad Wali Jaan, the brother of Afghanistan's national security adviser, Rangin Dadfar Spanta, has been shot dead in western province of Herat.

Regional police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi told the AFP news agency that Jaan was attacked by two gunmen on a motorbike as he came out of a public bath in the small town of Karukh early on July 17.

He said that the attackers escaped from the scene.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Wali was a public prosecutor in Karukh, which is close to Afghanistan's western border with Iran.

Spanta served as Afghanistan's foreign minister from 2006 until 2010 before becoming the national security adviser to President Hamid Karzai.
