Azerbaijani Forces Detain Armenian 'Saboteur'

BAKU -- Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry says its forces have detained an Armenian infiltrator.

In a statement issued late on January 28, the ministry said a shoot-out occurred between Azerbaijani forces and a group of Armenian saboteurs along those countries' mutual border.

It said a guide for the group, Mamiko Khodzhaian, 65, had been detained.

The statement said Khodzhaian was armed and was wounded in the exchange.

The report comes amid escalated tension over Azerbaijan's breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region.

At least two Azerbaijani soldiers and two soldiers of the unrecognized separatist territory were killed in the last 10 days.

Armenian separatists seized the mainly Armenian-populated region of Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan during a war in the 1990s.

Diplomatic efforts to settle the conflict have brought no results.

Some 20 soldiers and officers on both sides were killed in 2013.

Based on reporting by mod.gov.az, apa.az, AFP, Interfax, and trend.az

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
