BAKU -- A prominent Azerbaijani opposition activist has been released from jail early.

Elnur Mecidli, a member of the opposition People’s Front party, told RFE/RL that his request for early release was approved by a Baku court and he was released on parole on May 16.

Mecidli was found guilty of disrupting public order after he took part in an opposition protest action in Baku on April 2, 2011.

He was sentenced to two years in jail in October. The London-based human rights monitor Amnesty International has recognized Mecidli as a prisoner of conscience.

Twelve more prisoners of conscience remain in Azerbaijani jails, according to Amnesty International.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
