Beating Of Ukrainian University Rector's Spouse Probed

DONETSK, Ukraine -- The authorities in Ukraine's eastern city of Donetsk have launched an investigation into the beating of the wife of the local university's de facto rector, Yuriy Lysenko, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

On December 17, unknown assailants beat Tetyana Lev, who works as an accountant at the Donetsk National University.

Deputy Interior Minister Vasyl Farynnyk said the local prosecutor's office is investigating the attack.

Lev suffered concussion and is recuperating at home.

Lev's husband, Lysenko, was elected university rector by faculty members earlier this month. The Education Ministry, which had proposed its own candidate, has refused to confirm Lysenko in that post.
