Belarus Extradites Uralkali CEO

Belarusian television reports that chief executive of Russian potash producer Uralkali Vladislav Baumgertner has been extradited to Russia.

The report said Baumgertner was handed over to Russian law enforcement officials on November 21.

Baumgertner was arrested after the collapse of a joint venture with a Belarusian state company.

Belarusian authorities charged him with abuse of office and placed him under house arrest in Minsk.

The news about his extradition came after Suleiman Kerimov agreed to sell his nearly 22 percent stake in Uralkali to billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov.

Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka had demanded Kerimov sell his stake in Uralkali as a condition for freeing Baumgertner.

Lukashenka has also called for the restoration of the Russian-Belarusian company, which controlled 40 percent of the global potash market.
Based on reporting by Reuters, Interfax, and ITAR-TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
