The Week Ahead is a detailed listing of key events of the coming week affecting RFE/RL's broadcast region.

MONDAY, October 25:


Belarus: Experts from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) visit Belarus to investigate the death of Belarusian opposition journalist Aleh Byabenin.

CIS: Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) rapid reaction forces exercises begin in Russia's Chelyabinsk region (to October 29).

Kazakhstan: Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbaev visits Brussels, meets EU leaders (to October 26).

Serbia: Serbia's bid to join the EU to be discussed at the EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg.

Russia: Geneva hosts an informal round of multiparty consultations on Russia's accession to the WTO (to October 26).

Ukraine: Annual Ukraine-EU meeting at the level of foreign ministers starts in Brussels (to October 26).

TUESDAY, October 26:

Afghanistan: British House of Commons holds hearing on Afghanistan in London.

Iraq: Iraq Mega Projects conference opens in Istanbul (to October 28).

Russia/Chechnya: A Polish court in Warsaw is scheduled to hold a hearing on the temporary arrest of Ahmed Zakaev, who was detained in September under an international warrant issued by Russia.


WEDNESDAY, October 27:

Armenia/Azerbaijan: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev hosts a meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Astrakhan. Nagorno-Karabakh to be the subject of this trilateral meeting.

Kazakhstan: Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbaev visits France, meets with French President Nicolas Sarkozy (to October 28).

Russia/Poland: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov makes a working visit to Warsaw (to October 28).

Russia/Ukraine: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin attends Russian-Ukrainian meeting on economic cooperation in Kyiv.

Ukraine: EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht visits Kyiv (to October 28).

THURSDAY, October 28:

Azerbaijan: A joint report by international NGOs following their recent international freedom of expression mission to Azerbaijan to be launched in London.

Azerbaijan/Ukraine: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev visits Ukraine, meets with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

CIS/OSCE: The international parliamentary conference "The OSCE and the CIS: New Opportunities and Prospects" opens in St Petersburg.


SATURDAY, October 30:

Afghanistan: The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan is scheduled to announce final results of the September 18 Afghan parliamentary elections.


Russia: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev attends the second ASEAN-Russian summit in Hanoi, Vietnam (to October 31).


SUNDAY, October 31:

Russia: Russian opposition to hold a rally in Moscow’s Triumph Square and other Russian cities.

Ukraine: Regional elections.
