More Than A Dozen Killed In Iraqi Robbery, Other Attacks

Updated

At least nine people have been killed and 14 others wounded in the robbery of a jewelry store in north Baghdad.

Officials said gunmen attacked the jewelry store at a marketplace in the mostly Shi’ite neighborhood of Ur.

Those killed in the heist are reported to include police, shop owners, and passers-by.

Jewelry stores and banks have been a frequent target of robberies over the past two years.

Analysts say militants turned to robbery once they begin to suffer cash shortages.

Also on March 12, gunmen reportedly carried out two separate attacks in Tarmiyah, north of Baghdad, leaving five police officers dead.

Violence in Iraq has dropped significantly since its peak in 2006-07, but deadly attacks remain common after U.S. combat troops completed their withdrawal from the country in December.
