Silly Dictator Story #11: Tough Day For Dictators Banned From Olympics

Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has had a tough year running a tight ship back in Belarus, including fending off EU sanctions, expelling ambassadors, and showing some tough love toward Belarus’ Olympic athletes.

To top it off, not only will Lukashenka not be able to attend this evening's Olympics opening ceremony in London, but he was officially outed on Twitter by State Duma Deputy Speaker and Russian National Committee head Aleksandr Zhukov.

In the spirit of the Olympics and for all the banned leaders (we mean you, Assad and Mugabe), this cartoon by RFE/RL's Belarus Service cartoonist, ДЛ (DL), says it all.

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus. The name recognizes RFE/RL's role as a surrogate broadcaster to places without free media. You can write us at transmission+rferl.org
