At least five people were killed in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on April 2 as a result of violence.

The killings raise to at least 24 the number of people killed by violence during the past week.

The killings began with the killing of Hasan Soomro, a local leader of the ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP).

Locals in the southern Lyari neighborhood blamed police for Soomro's death -- accusations that have been denied by the authorities.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said 1,715 people were killed as a result of violent flare-ups in Karachi last year.
