Georgian Lawmakers Scuffle During Debate

Debate in the Georgia parliament on the ongoing political standoff in Ukraine has ended up in a brawl.

The December 11 parliament session was stopped after members of the ruling Georgian Dream political bloc and the opposition United National Movement party briefly exchanged blows.

The incident was sparked by a call by United National Movement member Giorgi Baramidze to adopt an official document to express Georgia's support for pro-EU protesters in Ukraine and to condemn the police action overnight against protesters in Kyiv's Independence Square.

Georgian Dream lawmaker Soso Jachvliani used offensive words and called on Baramidze to also "officially condemn the violent dismissal of opposition protests in Tbilisi in 2007 and 2011," when his party was in power.

Baramidze hit Jachvliani and several other lawmakers joined the scuffle. Parliament speaker Davit Usupashvili condemned the brawl.
