Tens of thousands of people are protesting in Germany's largest cities against the use of nuclear power.

The protesters are urging Germany's leaders to immediately abolish nuclear energy in the wake of Japan's reactor disaster.

A Berlin police spokesman said more than 50,000 have turned out in the capital.

A spokesman for the Hamburg police said several tens of thousands turned out in that northern port city's center. Protests are also under way in Munich and Cologne.
