Germany's Merkel Vows Quick Transition To Renewable Energy

Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed today that Germany would accelerate the transition to renewable energy as it rethinks its nuclear policy in the light of events in Japan.

Merkel, in a speech in parliament today, called for a "measured exit" from nuclear power and said "everything will be put under the microscope" during a safety review ordered after the quake and tsunami damaged a nuclear plant in Japan, raising fears of spreading radiation.

On March 15, Merkel ordered Germany's oldest nuclear plants closed for three months while the government carries out the safety probes.

The opposition has accused Merkel of changing the government's unpopular nuclear policy in the hope of avoiding defeat in key regional elections later this month.
