Pakistan's Supreme Court has dropped contempt charges filed against cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan for remarks he made about judges who monitored parliamentary elections in May.

The August 28 ruling came a day after Khan filed a formal explanation to the court about his remarks.

The charges were filed after Khan used the word "shameful" in a public speech to describe the inaction of judges amid allegations of vote-rigging.

But the Supreme Court has accepted Khan's explanation that he didn't intend to bring senior judges into disrepute and never named the Supreme Court or the superior judiciary.

Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaf party finished third in the polls, which were won by Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

But Khan's party was able to form a provincial government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.
