Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has urged Iranian authorities to "show no mercy" toward those implicated in a fraud case described as the biggest financial scam in the country's history.
In televised comments, Khamenei also called on politicians and the media to refrain from "making a fuss" over the $2.6 billion banking scam, adding: "Some people are seeking to use this as an excuse to bash the authorities."
Meanwhile, media reports said 11 lawmakers have written a letter to parliament speaker Ali Larijani requesting a probe into "violations of the law committed by the president, his chief of staff, the president of the Central Bank, and the economy minister."
The case, details of which emerged in September, has led to the detention of more than 20 suspects. The defendants allegedly used forged documents to obtain credit to purchase assets including state-owned companies.
