Czechs Government Approves Supply Of Ammunition To Iraqi Kurds

The Czech government has approved supplying ammunition to Kurdish forces in northern Iraq to help them fight Islamic State (IS) militants.

A government spokesman said on August 27 it was agreed to send ammunition for Kalashnikov assault rifles and machine guns, as well as hand grenades and ammunition for rocket-propelled grenades.

The ammunition, worth some $2 million, will be transported to Iraq by U.S. forces.

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Berlin would decide on August 31 on its contribution to forces fighting the IS, an Al-Qaeda splinter group that has seized swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has said Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Canada, and Albania had committed to providing "arms and equipment" to Peshmerga forces.

Based on reporting by Reuters and CTK
