Iraq TV Station Attacked By Militants

A local television station north of Baghdad was stormed by armed gunmen on December 23.

A police official said several suicide bombers entered the offices of the Salaheddin television channel in Tikrit and that explosions were heard inside the building.

There is no word on casualties.

Witnesses said a car bomb exploded at the gate of the building, which also houses the state TV channel Iraqiyah.

Security forces had reportedly surrounded the building, some parts of which were on fire.

Journalists have been under attack in Iraq lately, with seven having been killed in attacks since October.

Elsewhere, at least six troops were killed in attacks on December 23.

At least 5,000 people have been killed in Iraq this year in sectarian violence, the most since 2008.
