Militants have launched a coordinated suicide and car bomb attack on the headquarters of the Asayish security services in Irbil, the capital of Iraq's Kurdish region, killing six security officers.

The September 29 attack was the first major assault in Irbil since 2007.

Asayish troops first opened fire on a minivan that tried to enter their Irbil compound without authorization. The driver detonated his vehicle at the entrance.

Four suicide bombers armed with guns and grenades then tried to force their way inside but were shot dead.

An ambulance also exploded. Iraqi Kurdish security forces said in a statement that it was driven by a militant.

Six militants were killed and at least 42 people wounded.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the explosions, which came a day after results of the region's parliamentary elections were announced.

Based on reporting by Reuters, AP, and AFP
