Two Kazakh Police Officers Sentenced For Torture

Two police officers in Kazakhstan's northern Aqmola region have been sentenced to three years in jail for torture.

On November 8, a court in the region's Astrakhan district found the officers guilty of torturing a farmer to confess to cattle stealing.

Kazakhstan has been criticized for the use of violence by its police forces by domestic and international human rights organizations.

It is rare for Kazakh police officers to be put on trial for torture or other violations of suspects' rights.

Based on reporting by Tengrinews and Kazakhstan Today

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
