Kazakh Woman Jailed For Preparing Stepson For Suicide Bombing

ATYRAU, Kazakhstan -- A court in Kazakhstan's western city of Atyrau imposed a seven-year prison term on a young woman for preparing her 12-year-old stepson to become a suicide bomber.

After a trial that was held behind closed doors, the 18-year-old woman was found guilty on June 18 of propagating terrorism and the torture of an underage child.

Authorities say she planned an attack using her stepson inside the National Security Committee (KNB) building.

The woman's husband was reportedly killed by security forces in a counterterrorism operation last year.

Atyrau and other cities and towns in western Kazakhstan have made headlines in recent months following security operations in the region targeting Islamic extremists and terrorists.

Last autumn, security forces and police killed nine suspected militants in two separate operations in Atyrau and the nearby town of Kulsary.
