Kyrgyz Police Arrest Alleged Drug Trafficker

BISHKEK -- The Kyrgyz Interior Ministry said today that a major drug trafficker was detained in the northern town of Belovodskoye earlier this week, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Bishkek police did not name the man, but said he is a 33-year-old Russian citizen. Officials said they found significant amounts of heroin and marijuana in his home and added that he has previous convictions for drug-related crimes.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed the suspect was a key figure in organizing the transit of huge quantities of drugs to Russia. He is also suspected of distributing illegal drugs in Bishkek and Kyrgyzstan's northern Chui region.

Central Asia is the major transit point for illegal drug trafficking from Afghanistan to Russia and further into Europe.
