Officials in Pakistan say militants have shot dead three police officers in Pakistan's troubled northwest.

A purported spokesman for the banned Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for orchestrating the attack that occurred in the Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, along the Afghan border.

Police had earlier said Taliban militants are suspected.

According to the police, the militants fired on a patrol and fled.

The attack occurred in the Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, along the Afghan border.

Officials have said that some 35,000 Pakistanis, including more than 3,000 soldiers, have been killed in terrorist attacks in Pakistan since the 9/11 attacks in the United States and the subsequent U.S.-led invasion of neighboring Afghanistan.
