Pakistani Intelligence Officer Killed In Volatile Northwest

Pakistani police say gunmen have shot dead an intelligence officer in the country's volatile northwest.

Police officer Khalid Khan said two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire early on October 24, killing officer Akbar Ali in the Charsadda district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, located along the porous border with Afghanistan.

He said the gunmen fled the scene.

Khan said Ali was on his way to work in the provincial capital, Peshawar, when he was killed.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement after the attack.

The group's spokesman, Muhammad Khurasani, said the gunmen returned to their hideout after carrying out the attack.

It was unclear why Ali was specifically targeted.

On September 18, three Pakistani military officers were killed in an ambush in Peshawar. Both the Islamic State extremist group, which has stepped up attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan recently, and a Pakistani Taliban faction claimed responsibility.
