Pakistan's army says it has launched new attacks against suspected militant strongholds in the country's lawless tribal areas.

Pakistani jets and artillery on July 13 pounded militant hideouts near Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal region.

Air strikes were carried out in Mosaki, Kharkamar, and Mirali -- areas where the Pakistani Taliban and other Al-Qaeda-linked extremist groups hold sway.

The attacks in North Waziristan are part of a monthlong offensive by the army against the Pakistani Taliban.

The military said last week it had recaptured Miranshah after three weeks of aerial bombing and gunbattles with militants, calling it the first "substantial" gain since the operation began on June 15.

The offensive has left hundreds of militants dead, according to the military. Nearly 1 million civilians have reportedly fled the region.
