Pakistan Says Air Strikes Kill 65 Suspected Militants In Northwest

The Pakistani military says its jets have killed 65 suspected militants in strikes on five hideouts in a Taliban stronghold near the Afghan border.

The air strikes on September 10 targeted areas in the North Waziristan tribal region where the army has been conducting an offensive since mid-June.

The army says its operation has so far killed more than 900 militants, but the claim could not be confirmed independently.

Nearly a million people have reportedly fled the offensive and taken shelter at camps for the displaced.

The air strikes come a day after the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for a September 6 attack on a naval facility in Karachi that left one sailor and two attackers dead.

Defense Minister Kwaja Muhammad Asif said the attackers had received support from “insiders” in Pakistan’s navy.
