Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov is beginning two days of talks with Pakistani officials in Islamabad.
Few details on the agenda have been released, but the two sides are expected to discuss ways to tackle Islamist militancy as well nuclear proliferation.
Russia is concerned that Islamist extremists on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have links to militants in the North Caucasus as well as in former Soviet Central Asia.
It also wants to increase its regional influence, and Pakistan is an important regional player.
The talks are also likely to include cooperation against drug trafficking originating from Afghanistan and routed through Pakistan and Iran to Europe.
