Police Colonel Killed In Russian Republic

Interior Ministry officials in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia's volatile North Caucasus say a police colonel was killed by an unknown assailant.

Anatoly Bukin was shot on January 28 when entering his apartment block.

The assailant escaped the scene.

Bukin, 36, was hospitalized with a gunshot wound in his head, and died in hospital several hours later.

Local law enforcement officers have launched investigations into the incident.

Violence between Islamic militants and police in Russia's troubled North Caucasus region leaves scores of people dead and injured each year.

The region's violence-plagued republics include Kabardino-Balkaria, Daghestan, Ingushetia, and Chechnya.

Based on reporting by Interfax and ITAR-TASS
