New Russian Commission Set Up To Combat Terror Financing

The Kremlin says President Vladimir Putin has set up an interdepartmental commission to combat terrorism financing.

In a decree signed on November 18, Putin ordered the Prosecutor-General's Office, the central bank, and regional authorities to submit to the new commission any information they may have on organizations and individuals suspected of terrorist activities.

The move comes after Russia confirmed that a bomb had brought down a Russian passenger plane over Egypt last month, killing all 224 people on board.

Putin ordered Russia’s secret service to hunt down those responsible and pledged to step up air strikes in Syria “so that the criminals understand that vengeance is inevitable."

An affiliate of the Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for downing the plane.

IS militants also say they carried out last week’s attacks in Paris that killed 129 people.

Based on reporting by Reuters and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
