Russian property developer Sergei Polonsky -- wanted in Russia on embezzlement charges -- has been detained in Cambodia and may be handed over to Interpol.
Polonsky's lawyer, Aleksandr Karabanov, says his client was picked up on November 11. He said Cambodian police are searching Polonsky's island, off the coast near the city of Sihanoukville.
Last week, the Russian Interior Ministry's Investigative Department denied Polonsky's request for a plea bargain. Russian authorities have officially asked Cambodia to extradite Polonsky, though the two countries do not have an extradition agreement.
Polonsky and two associates were arrested in Cambodia last year after local sailors claimed they had beaten them.
Polonsky spent three months in Cambodia in detention before fleeing to Israel, where he unsuccessfully tried to get Israeli citizenship. He then returned to Cambodia.
