Russia: U.S. Charges Over Nuclear Treaty 'Unfounded'

Russia says accusations by the United States that Moscow violated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Treaty are "unfounded."

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on July 30 that the U.S. charges were "as baseless as all of Washington's claims" lately and "no proof" was provided.

The United States said it notified Russia on July 28 about Moscow's testing of a new ground-launched cruise missile, breaking the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty that President Ronald Reagan signed with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987.

The treaty was designed to eliminate ground-launched missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said it had questions for the United States, including its "production of armed drones" Moscow says are also "ground-based cruise missiles."

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on July 30 that Russia should resolve the issue and "preserve" the treaty.

Based on reporting by Reuters and ITAR-TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
