Thousands of cars and trucks were stuck in traffic over the weekend of December 1-2, some for more than two days. According to Russian media reports, after heavy snow caused traffic to build up, some motorists ended up being stuck for more than 40 hours in freezing temperatures on a remote stretch of the M10 highway, which links Moscow with St. Petersburg. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the incident served as a reminder that the country's road services need to work more efficiently to prevent such massive traffic jams from happening again.
