Serbia is holding a national day of mourning for 13 people who were killed in a shooting rampage by a war veteran.

The bloodshed in the village of Velika Ivanca, south of Belgrade, has been described as the worst such incident in Serbia in at least two decades.

Authorities said the suspected gunman, a 60-year-old man, went from house to house around dawn on April 9, gunning down his mother, his son, a two-year-old child, and 10 other relatives and neighbors.

Most of the victims are believed to have been killed as they slept.

Officials said the gunman shot his wife and himself as police moved in. They have been hospitalized.

Relatives said the gunman had served as a Serbian soldier in the 1990s war in Croatia.
