Former Trebinje Mayor Bozidar Vucurevic was arrested at a border crossing between Bosnia and Serbia on April 4.

Serbia says it has detained a war crimes suspect accused by Croatia of ordering the shelling of its ancient city of Dubrovnik in 1991.

Police said Bozidar Vucurevic was detained on a Croatian arrest warrant at a border crossing between Bosnia and Serbia on April 4.

It is now up to Croatia to seek Vucurevic's extradition from Serbia for a possible trial.

Dubrovnik, a UNESCO heritage site, was damaged in an assault by the Serb-led Yugoslav Army during Croatia's 1991-95 war for independence.

Vucurevic was the mayor of Trebinje, a Bosnian Serb town on the mountains above Dubrovnik, during the shelling, which triggered an international outcry.
