Serbian President Boris Tadic has sent his official letter of resignation to the parliament in Belgrade, clearing the way for joint presidential and parliamentary elections.

Parliament speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic announced that the presidential election will be on May 6, when a parliamentary, regional and local vote had been already scheduled.

Following Tadic's resignation, Djukic-Dejanovic will become Serbia's acting president until the vote.

Tadic has already announced he will run for a third term.

Opinion polls show Tadic, the leader of the center-left Democratic Party (DS), is likely to face his longtime rival, Tomislav Nikolic of the right-wing populist Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), in a second-round runoff.
