Scientists made culinary history on August 5 by offering the world's first hamburger made from laboratory-grown meat to volunteer diners. Dutch scientist Mark Post unveiled the beef burger, cultured from cattle stem cells, in front of an audience in London. The meat was cooked in a frying pan and eaten by two guests, who described it as "juicy" with an "intense taste." The event was the product of years of research by Post and his colleagues intended to show how meat grown from cells in a laboratory might one day be a true alternative to meat from live animals.
