U.S. President Barack Obama has accused Russia of blocking action against Syria in the UN Security Council.

Western powers are pushing for a UN Security Council resolution demanding Damascus provide unfettered access for humanitarian aid or face the threat of sanctions.

Obama criticized Russia for opposing the resolution, saying it is not just "the Syrians that are responsible" for the suffering of civilians but "the Russians, as well."

Obama spoke on February 11 at a joint news conference with French President Francois Hollande, whose country supports the resolution.

The draft resolution was circulated on February 11 to all 15 council members.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the text is a "one-sided" effort to blame the Syrian government for holding up aid.

Based on AP and Reuters reporting

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
