Syrian forces have reportedly stormed three neighborhoods in the central city of Homs and tanks have swept into several southern towns.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights at least one civilian, a 12-year-old child, was killed when tanks and troops charged into the Bab Sebaa, Bab Amro, and Tal al-Sour districts of Homs overnight.
A human rights campaigner in Homs told Reuters news agency by telephone that "there are reports of more deaths but they cannot be confirmed."
The authorities say 11 soldiers and police were also killed, blaming "armed terrorist groups" for the violence.
Some 15 people were shot dead in Homs on May 6 as they staged demonstrations after weekly prayers.
Police operations are also continuing in the cities of Baniyas and Deraa.
