Tajikistan Officially Joins World Trade Organization

DUSHANBE -- Tajikistan has been officially admitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

At a ceremony in Geneva on December 10, WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon signed the protocol on Tajikistan's admission to the international organization.

Earlier, Lamy had said that accession to the WTO "will firmly integrate Tajikistan into the global economy and the global trading system, providing an open, transparent, and nondiscriminatory environment."

Tajikistan's negotiations to join the WTO lasted for 11 years.

Tajikistan becomes the 158th member of the WTO and the second Central Asian country to be admitted.

Kyrgyzstan became a WTO member in 1998.
