Seven Turkish Soldiers Killed In Kurdish Ambush

Kurdish rebels ambushed a Turkish military convoy in the southeast of the country today, killing seven soldiers.

Officials said the soldiers were killed when the rebels detonated a series of roadside bombs as the military convoy was passing.

The attack took place in the predominantly Kurdish Hakkari region, close to the border with Iraq.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Turkey's Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz vowed a strong military retaliation.

The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey and a number of countries, including the United States.

The conflict with the rebels has claimed more than 45,000 lives since it began in 1984.
