Two Azerbaijani Soldiers Killed In Clash Near Nagorno-Karabakh

Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry says that two of its soldiers have been killed in an exchange of gunfire with Armenian troops near disputed the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Ethnic Armenian separatists backed by Yerevan seized the predominantly ethnic Armenian enclave of Azerbaijan in a war in the 1990s that left some 30,000 dead.

The region remains tense and there are regular exchanges of gunfire along the cease-fire line established in 1994.

The October 5 clash came as French President Nicolas Sarkozy begins a visit to the South Caucasus region, arriving in Armenia today before traveling to Azerbaijan and Georgia on October 7.
