Sergei Guriyev, a prominent economist, left Russia permanently in 2013 after coming under investigation by Moscow authorities. Now a professor at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, Guriyev spoke with Iolanda Badilita of RFE/RL's Moldovan Service in Strasbourg on April 21 about the extent to which corruption cripples Russia's economy. Guriyev said the problem is as intractable as in "the least developed countries in the world" -- and stressed that Moscow relies on support from some Western European political parties to maintain power.
