Ukraine Marks Anniversary of Crimean Tatar Deportations

Events are being held in Ukraine to mark the 71st anniversary of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars. Around 180,000 Tatars were deported to Central Asia by Stalin in 1944. Many returned in the 1980s and 1990s, but have complained of discrimination and abuses since Russia illegally annexed Crimea last year. At an event in Kyiv on May 17, people lit candles in memory of the many Tatars who died during the deportation. (RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service)
