U.S. Congressional Delegation Visits Tbilisi

A U.S. congressional delegation, led by Senator Ben Cardin (Democrat-Maryland), has visited the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.

On June 29, the delegation met with Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, and other officials, as well as representatives of the opposition United National Movement party.

Cardin told journalists after the talks that Georgia is a country of "importance to the United States" and "to the region."

He also said the U.S. congressional delegation had reiterated Washington’s strong support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and its European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

Cardin chairs the U.S. Helsinki Commission and is a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The delegation also included Democratic Senator Tom Harkin (Democrat-Iowa) and representatives Robert Aderholt (Republican-Alabama), Phil Gingrey (Republican-Georgia), David Schweikert (Republican-Arizona), and Adam Schiff (Democrat-California).
