Uzbek President To Be Inaugurated On April 10

Uzbekistan's Central Election Commission has announced the inauguration of President Islam Karimov will take place on April 10.

Karimov won a fourth term in office in the March 29 election, receiving more than 90 percent of the vote.

Karimov won the election despite a constitutional restriction against any individual serving more than two terms in office, a fact the elction commission never raised during the process for registering candidates of the presidential campaign.

Karimov has been president of Uzbekistan since the country became independent in late 1991.

Prior to that, he had been the Soviet leader of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic since 1989.

It was unclear if any foreign dignitaries would attend the inauguration.

Based on reporting by TASS and Trend.az

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
